Safety is a constant concern which not only affects our day to day operations and decision making but also affects long term company policies. Adequate usage of safety equipment at a workplace provides additional protection to employees in the presence of a slew of other safety measures. Common safety equipment in many workplaces comprises of PPE kits and Hands Free Safety tools as well as high-visibility clothing like reflector jackets that are worn usually on job sites. There are also many special safety items available for specific workplaces in the market today.

Different Kinds of Risk Associated at Workplace:
There are two kinds of risks: one is the inherited risk of the work or workspace. The other is trickier where accidents occur despite all precautions. In other words, even if the list of hazards at workplaces is eliminated as much as possible, accidents may still seep in.
These accidents include damage to the head, hands/fingers or any other part of the body from suspended or falling objects to machine failure accidents. Protection against job site accidents is a must since they occur when you’re required to work in a position that causes a great deal of strain.
For example, jobs that require frequent manual lifting or guiding suspended heavy loads and other such related repeated activities.
Hence working for long hours without safety tools can increase the risk of injury tenfold to the worker. In such situations safety equipment/tools are critical in protecting the workers body from the wrath of extreme danger or damage to the body caused by accidents. Furthermore, precautions against accidents also need to be taken. Both preventive measures and emergency and rescue measures in case the accident did occur.

Making the Right Choice: Before choosing any kind of safety equipment, it is pertinent to consider whether it is suitable for the job, whether it offers the right level of safety with protection and what training and maintenance are required to the personnel that will be using these tools. It is important that the end-users or atleast a representative from the user should be consulted in selection/approval of the safety equipment. This ensures that equipment fits properly to the onsite worker safety parameters and is not lacking comfort.
Below are some Case Studies of how RAAH was able solved the challenges for its customers.
Case Study# 1: Challenge was a land drilling rig operations in Indonesia had implemented hands free
Policy, the reason being when directing suspended loads, workers used the traditional methods which were against the hands free policy.
Solution: RAAH proposed a solution to use the Stiffy push pull tool to avoid any hands contact with the suspended load. The workers were not sure how to use the equipment on-site, so RAAH specially designed pictorial posters to help the workers use the tool correctly and effectively.
The HSE Manager’s feedback: ‘Simple use and yet helps to prevent hands contact with the material thus assuring no injuries. Workers have used it easily as it is an easy application tool. A barge captain’s comment: ‘It is designed very well. Robust and functional with hook for grabbing and wide tip for pushing.’
Case Study# 2: A clients Challenge was thatPallets were required to be transferred and HSE team felt that more could be done to make Pallets movements safe for the worker, especially at such heights.
Solution: RAAH International designed its own brand of Pallet Lifters, Pallet Bars and an Assembly kit that allowed for safe movement of pallets.
Comment from the Enduser: ‘Excellent source of a safer way to move pallet dynamic lifts from work boats to rigs’ ‘RAAH Pallet Cage is a much safer way to move pallets besides standard pallet forks’
Case Study#3: Challenge from the client was that they were leading a Hands Committee which has been tasked to reducing hand injuries at their site, specifically at the Production inside of an Oil Refinery and the operation of opening and closing valves which were in some very congested areas sometimes and create a lot of pinch points and line of fire.
Solution: RAAH offered a Hands Free Safety Kit that contained: Push Pull Tool, Snare, Slide Sledge Hammer Kit, Rod Lifter, RAAH Slings, Safe T Stick, Pipe Handling Tool, Tagattach, Fingersaver, Portable Valve Drivers to help limit the issues with pinch points on hands and finger thus reducing injuries.
Comment from the Client: “The riggers are getting adjusted to using the tools. They weren’t totally buying in initially but got a better understanding of the safety aspects. They had a better appreciation of not putting themselves in the line of fire as they become more comfortable with using the tools.”
